U.S. campaigns against net censorship

Officially, at any rate, the United States is making a global push against internet censorship. The State Dept. is continually raising the issue, which it gives a high priority, with foreign governments, we're told.

The U.S. ambassador to Australia has raised concerns over the Labor government's planned mandatory net filter law.

Google has been pressing to make China's net censorship subject to international trade law, which would, presumably, limit such efforts.

Nevertheless, Vietnam is going right ahead with orders on internet cafes to block selected web sites.

Speaking of the State Dept., U.S. officials fear Wikileaks may publish hundreds of secret cable messages and rock a lot of diplomatic boats. Hence, U.S. spooks are looking for Wikileaks mastermind Julian Assange, we're told. Daniel Ellsberg, of Pentagon Papers fame, thinks Assange could be in some danger. Assange, an Australian who spends much of his time in Iceland, has reportedly been out of sight for about a week.

Assange has reportedly arranged the legal defense of a U.S. Army soldier accused of leaking the helicopter kill video and other materials to Wikileaks.

I fell for a set-up, it seems. The Israelis were accused of doctoring an audio tape in which "Go back to Auschwitz" and "Remember 9/11" were heard. So along comes a grainy video apparently showing an IDF soldier executing someone.

But, lo and behold, the video shows signs of being tampered with, according to Jewish Peace News, which showed the video.

Racheli Gei of Peace News writes that Peace News analyst Richard Silverstein was told by an expert that the video had been tampered with.

Now one might say, aha!, both sides do it. However, an interesting question is how the video got into the hands of Israel critics. The Israelis confiscated all tapes and only released what suited them.

So, my guess is that this was a set-up meant to take the sting out of the fake audio tape charges.

FAIR charges that Israel and its media supporters are raising bogus Turkish terror-link charges in order to justify the flotilla killings.

Comm Czar Stephen Conroy's internet filter plan is stirring up a hornet's nest Down Under.

Another press attack on the plan:

A Facebook adviser thinks the plan won't work, anyway.

Conroy ups the ante and proposes even more internet controls on Australians. He apparently got the idea from U.S. Patriot Act record-keeping laws that limit privacy and anonymity.

Mohammed cartoonist Lars Vilks is still having an impact on the censorship debate.

A Texas writer urges Muslims to swallow their pride and back freedom of expression.

Vilks is still being troubled by Muslim threats.

The Bilderbergers are huddling again. Among those who attend these confidential pow-wows are members of the press who are sworn to secrecy. So why are they there? To get an idea of the direction their "reporting" is expected to take? BTW, in the past, the Rockefellers were the main force behind these confabs.
